The Africa Business Ethics Conference (ABEC) is a business-community-led global forum for convening a broad stakeholder group that for the first time includes the private sector in Africa to address the complex and peculiar challenges posed by corruption in the host country and in the region. ABEC takes place annually in one African country convening global and regional experts, civil society, the media, and policy makers along with the organized private sector.

This year's Africa Business Ethics Conference will be held in Botswana for the first time, from December 6-7, at the Travelodge Conference Centre in Gaborone. The conference is being held on these dates to commemorate two very special occasions: the UN International Anti-Corruption Day (Saturday, December 9) and the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, of which Botswana is a participating member state. The theme of the conference is: Combating Corruption: Celebrating the Gains and Strengthening Public and Private Sector Collective Action.

ABEC Task Force

The third Africa Business Ethics Conference was hosted in Nairobi Kenya under the theme “Business Ethics & Sustainability; a case for self-regulation”. The conference resolved to form a business ethics task force to guide the implementation of the conference recommendations and enhance business ethics. The task force members are anti-corruption experts and stakeholders who will promote business ethics beyond the conference. The ABEC founder and convener Ms. Fatma El Maawy convened the inaugural meeting of the ABEC 2021 task force on the 22nd of June 2022 hosted by the KEPSA Foundation. The Taskforce will go beyond awareness raising and shall create an attitude and behavior change for an ethical society.

Africa Business Integrity Network Member Recognition and Awards Event

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) launched a flagship anti-corruption compliance training of trainers program for African professionals in May 2017 to unlock the potential for the business communities in Africa to combat corruption through increased adherence to high standards of business ethics and integrity. Participating organizations in the CIPE anti-corruption compliance training of trainers program are members of the Africa Business Integrity Network (ABIN) who share a common objective to promote corporate ethics, integrity, and compliance with laws and regulations that prevents corruption and illicit transactions in Sub Sahara Africa.

CIPE on the 28th of July 2022 was celebrating 5 years of professional commitment to championing Business Integrity in Africa by hosting the Maiden Edition of the Africa Business Integrity Network (ABIN) Awards & Recognition event. Our founder & convener was privileged to receive the award for Training Trail Blazer 365 which recognized Milestones Resource Solutions as the ABIN training partner that trained the most number of companies in a year.

 Integrity Champions Network(ICN)

One of the resolutions at the ABEC 2021 was the formation of the Integrity Champions Network (ICN) to maintain the ethics conversation between the conferences. On 8th December 2022, we launched the Integrity Champions Network whose goal is to inspire & build a community of individuals committed to compliance and ethical business practice through information provision, ongoing training, and networking.

According to Lars Benson, Regional Director Africa, CIPE despite efforts, most people believe that corruption is getting worse globally and attribute this to the fact that it is a complex issue that requires collective action, including legislation such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in the United States. The actions that helped reduce corruption in the United States were granting women the right to vote, professionalizing government service, and empowering women to vote and bring change to different industries.
